The park sits on a super volcano, and its geothermal features are fueled by the heat of a massive magma chamber beneath the surface. Geysers erupt when underground water is heated past boiling, building pressure until it bursts like a fountain. Over time, minerals deposited from these eruptions build terraces and formations that are uniquely Yellowstone.
